Person-Centred Therapy

Person-Centred therapy is a humanistic approach, developed by Carl Rogers, it’s built on a simple yet profound idea: you are the expert of your own life.

Instead of the therapist acting as a directive expert telling you what to do, this approach positions the therapist as a supportive facilitator, creating a safe space for you to explore your inner world, gain insights, and find your own solutions.

The core of the therapy lies in the quality of the relationship between you and your therapist, fostered by three essential ‘core conditions’:

  • Empathy (Empathic Understanding): Your therapist will strive to deeply understand your feelings and experiences from your perspective, listening without judgement and reflecting back what they hear to ensure you feel truly understood.
  • Unconditional Positive Regard: This means your therapist accepts you completely as you are, without any conditions or judgements.  You are free to share any thought or feeling without fear of criticism.
  • Congruence (Genuineness): Your therapist is real and authentic during sessions, not hiding behind a professional mask.  This transparency helps build trust and creates a genuine, human connection.

Sessions in Person-centred therapy are non-directive, meaning you lead the way.  You decide what topics to bring up and the direction the conversation takes.  This allows you to focus on what feels most important to you at that moment.

Your therapist will use techniques like active listening and paraphrasing to help you clarify your thoughts and emotions, acting as a supportive mirror rather than a guide.  This process helps you to:

Develop self-awareness and a deeper understanding of your own feelings and behaviours.

Build self-esteem by experiencing non-judgemental acceptance.

Gain confidence in your ability to make positive changes and navigate life’s challenges more effectively.

Align your ‘real self’ with your ‘ideal self’, a concept critical to personal growth. Two women engaged in a counseling session in a bright, modern loft setting.
